How to cut 1/8 aluminum sheet ?

Nov 28, 2022

Aluminum sheet is a metal material with a wide range of uses, which is currently being developed in the industry.

1/8 aluminum sheet cutting is a very common processing method. The machinery and methods used in the production plant are quite different from those used at home.

Factory cutting

In the aluminum sheet production factory, we will use CNC machine tools to cut a long piece of aluminum sheet into regular size aluminum sheet, such as 4 x 8 aluminum sheet.

How to cut it at home ?

You definitely don't have a large CNC machine for cutting, so you can use some small hand tools or power tools for cutting 1/8 aluminum sheet

The tools that can be used for aluminum sheet cutting at home include:

  1. metal scissors

  2. circular saw

  3. metal brake

  4. hacksaw

Because aluminum is a metal material with relatively high hardness, 1/8 aluminum sheet is slightly thicker than 3mm aluminium sheet in thickness, and it is best to use electric tools to cut 3mm aluminium sheet and 1/8 aluminum sheet.

What are the specific steps of circular saw cutting 1 8 aluminum sheet ?

Let's take the circular saw cutting 1/8 aluminum sheet as an example. Specific steps are as follows:

1. Put it in the right place

Clamp the aluminum sheet to the saw stand with the edge of the aluminum sheet sticking out of the bracket, make sure there is enough space under the edge so we don't cut into the bracket when we cut the aluminum sheet

2. Lay out and measure your cut

Be sure to outline or draw the lines you need to cut. Circular saws are usually hand held, don't try to free cut, just draw on the workpiece and you'll see.

3. Lubricated blade

You can lubricate the blade with WD-40, water, cutting wax. A good lubricant reduces friction for a cleaner cut and keeps the blade and workpiece from overheating.

4. Keep the blade perpendicular to the 1 8 aluminum sheet

Cutting perpendicular to the aluminum sheet ensures the thinnest possible cut. Angled cuts are thicker and require more material to be cut, which can result in distorted or warped cuts and jagged and uneven edges

5. Clamp the 1 8 aluminum sheet

High quality cast iron C-clamps are a great way to lock your 1/8 aluminum plates in place. Use multiple clamps along the path of travel of the blade so that the workpiece does not "walk" off the blade during slicing.

6.Don't push yourself

Never try to cut the board too hard as it can create sparks and even shatter the blade. Always move the circular saw smoothly.
